Friday night sees the Moon glide close to Neptune – acting as a great guidepost in finding this super-faint planet. The ice giant will appear about 6 degrees away from the Moon in the southeast sky. Neptune shines at magnitude 7.8 making it a telescope target. Through the eyepiece it looks like a tiny, faint, blue-green disk. Amazing to think it sits 4.3 billion km from Earth – so distant that light takes 242 minutes from the 8th planet from the Sun, to reach your eye! Also don’t forget to check out super-bright Jupiter too – so beautiful.
